When the weather becomes cold where you live, it’s important to consider your automated watering system. The Edstrom Automated Watering System has been designed for use in facilities that are not exposed to freezing temperatures. If you live in a climate that gets very cold, the system must be installed in a heated building if you are to continue using it in the winter months.
If you live in an area that only experiences mild, overnight freezing temperatures you may consider doing one of the following:
- Turn off the water supply in the evening and allow animals to drink the system dry overnight.
- Open the drain valve at the end of each line allowing a slow trickle of water to run continuously.
Freezing temperatures very seldom damage the flex-tube system, however, there is no easy method to protect it from freezing. The use of electrical heat tapes is NOT recommended with this type of system. Heat tape can be installed on a rigid PVC pipe system, using care to install according to manufacturer’s instructions. The tape should be located in a position that cannot be accessed by the animals. To protect yourself and your animals from possible electrical shock when using a heat tape, it is suggested that the electrical circuit supplying the heat tape be set up with a Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI) device.
A rigid pipe system is more susceptible to damage by water freezing inside the lines. PVC lines should be drained to avoid the possibility of the pipe or fittings being split by freezing water. It is also a good idea to drain the flex-tube system. Both types of watering systems can remain installed throughout the months of non-use.
